World Heart Day & Youth-Led School Campaigns

In September 2025, Rwanda NCD Alliance (RNCDA) joined the global health community in commemorating World Heart Day under the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat” — a call to action to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) through early detection, equitable care, and healthy living. Globally, CVD remains the world’s leading cause of death, claiming over 20.5 million lives each year, with the majority occurring in low- and middle-income countries. RNCDA’s celebration was anchored in Rubavu District, where a week-long campaign mobilized communities around heart health. In partnership with Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), Swiss TPH, and Rubavu District authorities, RNCDA coordinated free screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and heart conditions across 15 health facilities. The campaign culminated in a vibrant Rubavu Car Free Day, drawing over 4,000 participants and extensive media coverage. https://x.com/RBCRwanda/status/1970884415816405334?s=20 To deepen youth engagement, RNCDA also conducted school-based NCD awareness sessions in three Rubavu schools, including one supported by Swiss TPH. These sessions introduced students to heart health basics, NCD risk factors, and the importance of early screening. The initiative was formally introduced to Rubavu’s Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs and the District Health Director, with full support from the local education office. This integrated approach to public awareness and youth education reflects RNCDA’s commitment to building a heart-healthy generation and advancing community-led NCD prevention.
